One Base Rules 2024
Registration - Wednesday 21st February 2024
Fishing Thursday 22nd - Saturday 24th February 2024

Anglers Entry Fee & Guest Entry:

An entry fee of $4,000 is payable for a team of up to four anglers, for each additional guest a fee of $1,000.00 must be paid. Children 15 years and under $250.00.

Entry Fees:

No team or angler can compete in the tournament unless their entry fee and membership payments have been made in full 24 hours prior to start fishing. A team must consist of two or more anglers and no more than eight anglers. In the event of a weather cancellation entry fees will be fully refunded.

Club Memberships:

If an angler is not a member of a club affiliated to the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council then they must also pay a tournament membership of $45.00 per angler at registration the night before their team starts fishing. You can pre-register online https://www.sporty.co.nz/viewform/219316

Meet the Teams Registration and Briefing:

Registration Wednesday 21st March 2024 commencing at 2:00pm to 5:00pm with the Tournament briefing starting at 6:00pm in ‘Riviera HQ’ next to the Whangaroa Sports Fishing Club “WSFC”.

All crews must be represented by a fishing member of the crew and must be present for tournament briefing at 6.00pm sharp on the 21st February 2024 to be eligible to fish the tournament. Late entries will only be accepted under exceptional circumstances. Any communication or notice to one team member is notice to all team members, whether at the briefing, over VHF Radio CH64, Tournament WhatsApp or by phone 021 739 854.

Fishing Days and Times:

  • Thursday 22nd February - Start fishing 7:00am and Away Night. No stop fishing.
  • Friday 23rd February - Stop fishing 4:30pm. All boats must be inside Kingfish Point by 5.30pm regardless.
  • Saturday 24th February - Start fishing 7:00am, stop fishing 4:00pm. All boats must be inside Kingfish Point by 5.00pm regardless.

Riviera HQ - One Base Check In:

Every team must physically check in with at least one fishing team member presenting at the ‘Riviera HQ’ on:

  • Friday 23rd February 2024 following stop fishing and prior to 6:30pm,
  • Saturday 24th February 2024 following stop fishing and prior to 6.00pm.

Prize Giving:

Saturday 24th February 2024 in Riviera HQ alongside WSFC from 6.30pm.

No Start Line:

There is no start line. No entrants are allowed to leave the harbour prior to 6.00am on 22nd & 24th February. No tournament lines are allowed in the water until the 7:00am announcement on VHF radio CH 64 to start fishing. You may catch bait prior to 7:00am.

Speed Limit in Whangaroa Harbour:

All vessels are reminded of a 5 knot rule will be in place from inside Kingfish Point for all tournament entrants from 7:00am, 22nd February to 5:00pm, 24th February. Any entrant exceeding that limit will be withdrawn from the Tournament.

Fishing in From Other Areas:

There will be no allowance for fishing in (from other locations), all teams boats must be in Whangaroa Harbour prior to briefing and have at least one fishing team member at briefing.

Fishing Area:

Allowable Fishing area is as per Whangaroa Sports Fishing Club Sponsors Grid Map 2023-2024. All fishing must take place on the east coast of the North Island within the prescribed fishing areas. All fish caught outside this area are deemed non-tournament fish.

Sport Fishing Section:

Eligible Fish Species:

  • Kingfish - must exceed 90 cm for measure and/or release.
  • Snapper - must exceed 40cm for measure and/or release.
  • Kahawai - must exceed 40 cm for measure and/or release
  • Trevally - must exceed 40 cm for measure and/or release.

Points Formula and Prize Giving:

  • Kingfish/- Measure and release 2 points/cm. Only two fish per angler per day
  • Snapper/ – Measure and release 3 points/cm. Only two fish per angler per day
  • Kahawai/- Measure and release 2 points/cm. Only two fish per angler per day
  • Trevally/- Measure and release 2 points/cm. Only two fish per angler per day

Angler Points: A maximum of TWO of the individual Eligible fish species for each angler per day will be recognised and count towards Angler Points.

Team Points: A maximum of FOUR of each individual eligible fish species for each Team per day will be recognised and count towards the Team Points.

Tournament Winner Sportfish

  • The overall winner will be awarded to the overall angler and overall team with the most Points as per above. Prizes are 1st 2nd and 3rd Points in each category.
  • There will be one individual prize awarded per eligible Sportfish species for the fish closest to the average Length.
  • There is NO line weight restriction for Sportfish.

Measure Sportfish:

All Sportfish species measured must be loaded onto HTTPS://riviera.fishingcomp.co.nz

All measured and/or released fish must have a dated and timed viewable digital photo to verify length and photos clearly showing the official Riviera fish measure used to measure the fish

Only photos using the official Riviera fish measure will be accepted (ensure the settings of the phone/camera you are using is set to capture date/time – ensure photos are saved to your device)

All fish must be caught in accordance with IGFA and NZSFC rules to qualify for this tournament

  • Thursday and Friday – all uploads to be done by or before 6:00pm Friday 23rd February 2024.
  • Saturday – all uploads to be done by or before 4:30pm.

Any uploads after these times will not be included.

Catch Limits:

No limit on the number of Eligible Fish Species can be measured and released per day but only TWO species per angler per day will be eligible for points.

We Support Sustainable Fishing - This is a measure and release tournament:

In the event of any Sportfish being unable to be released due to injury or you wish to keep for your own on board catering needs, the fish may continue to be measured and used as one of your catches as per the measure and release rules.

Game Fishing Section:

Eligible Fish Species:

  • Billfish (Striped Marlin, Blue Marlin, Black Marlin & Broadbill Swordfish)
  • Shortbill Spearfish, Mahi-mahi
  • Tuna (Yellowfin and Bigeye)

Points Formula and Prize Giving:

  • All Tagged Bill fish Including Marlin, Broadbill 240 Points.
  • Shortbill Spearfish, Mahi-mahi 100 Points.
  • Tuna, Yellow Fin and Big Eye 150 Points.

Tournament Winner Gamefish

The overall winner will be awarded to the angler and overall team with the most points as per above. Prizes are 1st 2nd and 3rd Points in each category.

There will be one individual prize awarded per eligible Gamefish species for the first eligible fish caught during the Tournament.

In the event of any Gamefish being unable to be released in good condition with little or no chance of survival (e.g. a tail wrapped marlin) the fish may be weighed at WSFC and points as per a tag and release will be awarded to the Team.

Calling in catches:

Game Fish Species Only - All catches must be called in on VHF CH64 within 30 minutes of the capture being completed. All hook ups must be called in also on VHF CH64. If unable to make contact with VHF CH64 then calls may be relayed or phoned into +64 21 817202. All calls in are to give their position as accurately as possible referring to the Sponsors Grid Map.

Line Weight:

Max 37kg.

Minimum 15kg for Billfish (Marlin & Broadbill) and Tuna.

Dead or live Bait Hooks:

All tournament participants must use non-offset circle hooks for all species whenever live or natural bait are being used for all game fish species.

Braid/ Spectra and Fusion type Line:

Braid/ Spectra and fusion type lines may be used as backing as approved by the NZSFC and IGFA (Monofilament, multifilament, and lead core multifilament lines may be used). Wire lines are prohibited. The use of backing is permissible. The catch shall be classified under the breaking strength of the first 5 meters (16.5 feet) of line directly preceding the double line, leader, or hook. This section must be comprised of a single, homogenous piece of line and may not exceed 37 kilogram (80 pound) line class.

Weigh Sheets and Tag Cards Gamefish:

All game fish species tagged and released must be loaded onto HTTPS://riviera.fishingcomp.co.nz including photos clearly showing the Tag in the fish and a correctly filled out WSFC Weigh sheet when handed in at the weigh station or handed into Riviera HQ. All tagged fish claims must also be accompanied by the correctly filled out tag card with the weigh sheet. Please make sure your weigh sheets and accompanying tag cards are correctly filled out as this can lead to fish being disqualified if they are not correct. Ensure weigh sheets are signed by both angler and skipper. All other species are to use HTTPS://riviera.fishingcomp.co.nz

  • Thursday and Friday – all uploads to be done by or before 6:00pm Friday 23rd February 2024.
  • Saturday – all uploads to be done by or before 4:30pm.

Any uploads after these times will not be included.

On the last day all physical (hard copy) weigh sheets, tag cards and photos must be delivered to the Convenors by 6:00pm at the Riviera HQ or your catch will not count.

ALL ANGLERS SECTION:

Radio Round Ups:

The official tournament radio call sign will be Riviera Invitational VHF CH 64. Radio Round ups will be at 10:00am and 2:00pm each day of fishing.

Stop Fishing:

VHF CH64 will call STOP FISHING and their call will be the official stop fishing time. Any fish hooked up before stop fishing can continue to be played until boated or tagged. If this takes the angler past the daily check in times then the fish will count for the following days tally, however on Saturday 24th February if the tagged or measured fish is not complete and the vessel is not inside Kingfish Point prior to 5:00pm fish caught that day will not be eligible for the tournament.

Disputes:

Any disputes must be raised in writing to the Tournament convenor at [email protected] by 5.30pm on Saturday 24th February 2024. The decision will be made by the Tournament convenor and will be binding to all parties concerned.

Entry Refunds:

Full refunds will be available up until six weeks prior to the tournament date and until three weeks prior to the tournament date, if we are able to replace your team entry with another team entry. Strictly no refunds after three weeks prior to the tournament. Allocation of funds from entries become non-refundable for the organisers after this time.

Safety Notice: THE RIVIERA INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT HAS BEEN ARRANGED FOR 3 DAYS OF COMPETITION AND IT IS THE SKIPPERS SOLE RESPONSIBILITY TO DETERMINE THAT ON ANY ONE DAY, THE SEA CONDITIONS AND WEATHER FORECASTS ARE SAFE FOR HIS/HER BOAT TO PUT TO SEA. IT IS THE SKIPPER’S RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THAT THE BOAT THEY INTEND TO PARTICIPATE IN IS CAPABLE OF PUTTING TO SEA AND MEETING LOCAL COAST GUARD REQUIREMENTS. PARTICIPATION IN THE RIVIERA INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT DOES NOT DIMINISH EACH SKIPPER’S SOLE RESPONSIBILITY UNDER MARITIME LAW NOR SHIFT ANY OF THAT RESPONSIBILITY TO THE WHANGAROA SPORTS FISH CLUB EVEN IF THE EVENT OFFICIALS MADE THE DECISION ON THE CONDITIONS FOR THAT DAY.
